Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty Assumes Command as Commandant, INA, Ezhimala

Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty officially took over as the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy on 15 January 2024. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1989, Vice Admiral McCarty is a distinguished officer with a wealth of experience and expertise.

A graduate of the Defence Service Staff College, Wellington (2005), and the National Defence College, New Delhi (2017), Vice Admiral McCarty specializes in ‘Gunnery and Missiles.’ His career includes serving as part of the commissioning crew of INS Delhi and commanding various vessels, including the Anti-Submarine Patrol Vessel INS Ajay, Guided Missile Corvette INS Khanjar, and Guided Missile Frigate INS Shivalik.

His extensive service also encompasses significant staff assignments, such as Training Commander at the Naval Academy and Command Plans Officer at the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. Additionally, he served as Directing Staff at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Sri Lanka, and held the position of India’s Defence Adviser to the Republic of Singapore, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of the Philippines.

As Commodore (Naval Plans) from 2018 to 2020, Vice Admiral McCarty played a pivotal role in formulating the combat policy of the Indian Navy. Promoted to the Flag Rank on 10 February 2020, he assumed the position of assistant chief of the naval staff (Staff Requirements) at the Naval Headquarters. Prior to his current appointment as Commandant, he served as Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet from 15 November 2022 to 9 November 2023.
