Launch of ‘Triput’: First of Two Additional P1135.6 Follow-On Ships

The first of two advanced frigates under construction by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the Indian Navy was launched on 23 July 2024 at GSL, Goa. The ship was ceremonially launched by Smt. Rita Sreedharan, accompanied by an invocation from the Atharva Veda, in the presence of Shri P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, Hon’ble Governor of Goa. Named *Triput*, after the mighty arrow, the ship symbolises the indomitable spirit of the Indian Navy and its capability to strike far and deep.

The contract for the construction of these two Triput-class advanced frigates was signed between the Ministry of Defence and Goa Shipyard Limited on 25 January 2019. Designed for combat operations against enemy surface ships, submarines, and aircraft, the Triput-class ships are 124.8 meters long, 15.2 meters wide, with a draught of 4.5 meters. They have a displacement of approximately 3600 tons and a maximum speed of 28 knots. Equipped with stealth features, advanced weaponry, sensors, and platform management systems, these ships represent the latest in naval technology.

The Triput-class ships are follow-ons to the Teg and Talwar-class frigates acquired from Russia. For the first time, these frigates are being constructed indigenously by an Indian shipyard. In alignment with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, a significant percentage of the equipment, including weapons and sensors, is of indigenous origin. This approach not only supports large-scale defence production by Indian manufacturing units but also contributes to employment generation and capability enhancement within the country.
