Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi Assumes Office as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff

Mumbai, January 4, 2024: Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM, NM, assumed the position of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on January 4, 2024. In a solemn ceremony, the newly appointed Vice Chief paid homage to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation by laying a floral wreath at the National War Memorial. Prior to his current role, Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.

 

Vice Admiral Tripathi is an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1985, he specializes in Communication and Electronic Warfare. Throughout his distinguished career, he served on frontline warships in various capacities, including Signal Communication Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer. He held key positions such as the Executive Officer and Principal Warfare Officer of the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mumbai.

 

Having commanded Indian Naval Ships Vinash, Kirch, and Trishul, Vice Admiral Tripathi accumulated extensive operational experience. His roles also include Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet at Mumbai, Director of Naval Operations, Principal Director of Network Centric Operations, and Principal Director of Naval Plans at New Delhi. Upon promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral, he served as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) at NHQ and as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.

 

Promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral in June 2019, he assumed the role of Commandant of the prestigious Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala. During his tenure as the Director General of Naval Operations from July 2020 to May 2021, Vice Admiral Tripathi played a crucial role in maintaining the Navy’s combat readiness despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, from June 2021 to February 2023, he served as the Chief of Personnel.

 

Vice Admiral Tripathi is a graduate of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, where he was honored with the Thimmaiya Medal. He further attended the Naval Higher Command Course and Naval Command College at the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, in 2007-08, winning the prestigious Robert E Bateman International Prize.

 

Recognized for his devotion to duty, Vice Admiral Tripathi is a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Nausena Medal. Beyond his military commitments, he is an avid sports enthusiast, closely following tennis, badminton, and cricket. Married to Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, an artist and homemaker, the couple has one son, a practicing lawyer, married to Tanya, who works in the policy-making domain. The Vice Admiral’s keen interest in international relations, military history, and the art and science of leadership reflects his holistic approach to his role in the Indian Navy.
