INSV Tarini Returns Triumphant After Historic Transoceanic Expedition by Indian Navy’s Women Officers

The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has made a triumphant return to her base port in Goa after completing a historic transoceanic expedition spanning nearly two months.

Led by Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, women officers of the Indian Navy, the expedition was undertaken in double-handed mode, marking a significant milestone as the first from India to achieve such a feat.

The expedition commenced from Goa on February 28, 2024, with renowned circumnavigator and mentor, Retired Commander Abhilash Tomy, flagging off the journey. Navigating through the unpredictable elements of the Indian Ocean for 22 days, INSV Tarini reached Port Louis, Mauritius, on March 21, 2024. The officers were warmly received and engaged in various events with officials from the Mauritius Coast Guard and the Indian High Commission, strengthening bilateral ties between the two maritime nations.

After a busy schedule at Port Louis, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A embarked on their return journey to Goa on March 30, 2024. Overcoming challenges posed by heavy winds, adverse sea states, and rough seas, the officers demonstrated remarkable seamanship and resilience, guiding INSV Tarini safely back to Goa on April 21, 2024.

Their accomplishments exemplify the Indian Navy’s dedication to promoting gender equality and empowering women in the maritime domain. Undeterred by challenges, the officers showcased exceptional seamanship and fortitude, embodying the spirit of adventure and exploration.

With their sights set on their next monumental voyage, a circumnavigation of the globe (Sagar Parikrama – IV expedition) on INSV Tarini scheduled to commence in September this year, the officers continue to inspire future generations, especially women, to pursue challenging maritime adventures.

The symbolic flagging of INSV Tarini at the boat pool of INS Mandovi, in the presence of naval personnel and families of Station Mandovi, highlights the collective achievement and camaraderie within the Indian Navy.
