Indian Navy Strengthens Foothold with Commissioning of INS Jatayu at Minicoy, Lakshadweep
The Indian Navy marked a significant milestone with the commissioning of INS Jatayu at Minicoy island, Lakshadweep, on March 6, 2024. The ceremony was graced by Adm R Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff, along with the Honorable Administrator of Lakshadweep, Shri Praful K Patel, and V Adm V Srinivas, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command. This event underscores the Navy’s commitment to bolstering its presence in the region, enhancing capacity building, operational reach, and sustainability.
The establishment of Naval Base at Minicoy will not only strengthen connectivity with the mainland but also contribute to the comprehensive development of the islands. INS Jatayu, under the operational control of Naval Officer in Charge (Lakshadweep), Southern Naval Command, will play a crucial role in safeguarding maritime interests in the area.
The commissioning ceremony, marked by grandeur and tradition, featured a 50-men Guard of Honour and an invocation in Sanskrit by Commander Vrat Baghel, the first Commanding Officer of the unit. Following the reading of the commissioning warrant, the commissioning plaque was unveiled, and the Naval Ensign was hoisted to the National Anthem. The commissioning pennant was then broken on the mast, symbolizing the official entry of INS Jatayu into active service. The ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command, alongside senior Naval officers and distinguished guests.
In addition to the commissioning, the inauguration of the Maritime Operations Center at Minicoy further underscores the Navy’s commitment to enhancing operational capabilities in the region. Adm R Hari Kumar interacted with the officers and men of INS Jatayu, lauding their efforts and emphasizing the vessel’s vital role in operational surveillance, aligning with the vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
The commissioning of INS Jatayu represents a significant step forward in the Indian Navy’s mission to ensure maritime security and foster growth and prosperity in the region.
