HENSOLDT radars shield German cities with six TRML-4D radars ordered under IRIS-T

Taufkirchen/Germany, 12th July 2023 – Sensor specialist HENSOLDT supplied six high-performance radars to the German Armed Forces as part of Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T SLM air defense system. The first system was delivered to the Bundeswehr the following year, in accordance with the order worth a three-digit million euro sum from Diehl Defence.

Thomas Müller, CEO of HENSOLDT, stated, “This order closed a capability gap of the Bundeswehr and marked the start of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). By working together with our partners Diehl and Airbus, we have strengthened national and alliance defense.”

The TRML-4D, which utilized the latest digital radar technology, was capable of detecting, tracking, and classifying various types of aerial targets. Emphasis was placed on small, fast, low-flying, and/or maneuvering cruise missiles, as well as aircraft and helicopters. It ensured rapid detection and tracking of approximately 1,500 targets within a radius of up to 250 km. Multiple systems were contracted to equip the Ukrainian air defense.

The joint solutions provided by Diehl Defence, Airbus, and HENSOLDT were fully compatible with NATO’s integrated air defense architecture and demonstrated their interoperability.

HENSOLDT boaste decades of experience in air defense radar systems and actively drove the further development of key technologies in this field. In addition to the TRML-4D multifunction radar, the company’s portfolio included the Twinvis passive radar, the Spexer product family, and radars for securing ship and air traffic. HENSOLDT supplied radars for the German Navy’s new frigates and corvettes, as well as for surveillance of German airspace and approach control at Bundeswehr airfields, among other applications.
