L&T Wins Significant Order for Part Construction of Two Fleet Support Ships

Delhi, July 09, 2024: Larsen & Toubro’s Precision Engineering Systems business vertical have secured a prestigious order for the partial construction of Two Fleet Support Ships (FSS) from Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), with the Indian Navy slated as the end user.

In August 2023, the Indian Navy contracted HSL to design and construct five FSSs.

FSS is specialised naval vessel crucial for providing logistics and material support to naval task forces at sea. These vessels, exceeding 220 meters in length and boasting approximately 45,000 tons displacement, will rank among the largest in the Indian Naval Fleet.

Aligned with the Government of India’s vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India), these vessels, the first of their kind to be built domestically, will be simultaneously constructed by both shipyards to meet demanding delivery schedules. This collaborative shipbuilding approach is pivotal in advancing strategic national goals, bolstering the Indian Naval fleet, and driving economic growth and technological innovation in India’s maritime sector.

Since receiving its first defence shipbuilding order in March 2010, L&T has achieved significant milestones in the ‘Make in India’ initiative, having internally designed, constructed, and timely delivered over 70 defence vessels. Notably, L&T will undertake the construction of the two Fleet Support Ships at its state-of-the-art shipyard in Kattupalli, near Chennai on India’s east coast. This facility stands as India’s most advanced shipyard, featuring in-house design and constructed according to globally benchmarked technological standards.
