Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM & WS), Pahalgam,
conducted a twenty-two-member mountaineering expedition to the Mt Khyam Tso
Massif in the Rumtse Phu region of Ladakh. The expedition was flagged off by team
leader Col Hem Chandra Singh, on 26 June 2026.
Following
a structured acclimatisation schedule in the Ladakh region, the team first
summited Mt Peak Pt 5,901m on 2 July 2026 under extreme weather conditions. In
a historic feat, the team leader launched the first-ever paragliding flight
from 5,600m on the same peak.
Battling
extreme weather, the team summited another technically challenging peak of the
massif at 6,090m and Mt Peak Pt 5,944m on 3 July 2026, demonstrating
exceptional grit, endurance, and teamwork. Undeterred by adverse conditions,
the team summited the final peak of the massif, Mt Khyam-III (6,018m) on 5 July
2026 and successfully descended to the road head camp.
The
successful ascent not only showcases the spirit of adventure and national pride
but also reinforces India’s growing footprint in the unexplored mountain ranges
of the Ladakh region.
