The battle of Badgam & Shalateng changed the course of the 1947 war. An extract
Colonel Ajay Kumar Raina with Shiv Kunal Verma
The Battle of Shalateng, fought on 7 November 1947, marked the first deliberate offensive undertaken by Indian forces in the Kashmir Valley. It was planned with care and executed with coordination that contrasted sharply with the improvised defence of the preceding days. Armour and infantry were employed in concert to strike the enemy’s flank and rear while denying routes of withdrawal.
The effect was decisive. The invaders, unprepared for a coordinated mechanized thrust, collapsed under pressure. Vehicles were abandoned, formations disintegrated, and retreat became disorderly flight. More important than the material losses was the psychological reversal. The assumption that Srinagar could be taken by momentum alone was shattered.
