Lockheed Martin India and Women in Aviation Celebrate Girls in Aviation Day
Women in Aviation International, India Chapter and Lockheed Martin India in association with Airport Authority of India (AAI) on September 19, celebrated Girls in Aviation Day at Goa Airport. With the vision to encourage girls to take up STEM subjects and explore career opportunities in related industries, the initiative is aimed at showcasing opportunities in the aviation and aerospace sectors. This initiative also aligns with the government of India’s Skills India initiative.
As part of the programme, Women in Aviation International (India Chapter) invited 60 students from various schools for a tour of Goa Airport. Visiting students were given an opportunity to explore, learn, and discover the various aspects of and roles in aviation and aerospace such as air traffic controller, airline dispatch, pilot, aviation maintenance technician, aeronautical engineer or aviation management. In addition, the girl students were given a tour of the ATC Tower, Airside, Terminal Building and AOCC and all their queries and questions were answered by the officials working in the respective departments.
Speaking on the occasion, President, Women in Aviation International (India Chapter), Radha Bhatia shared,” This is the third year that the WAI India Chapter is celebrating ‘Girls in Aviation Day’ and we are delighted to host the same at Goa. This day is celebrated for the young girls to encourage them to choose aviation as a viable career opportunity. India has the maximum number of female pilots world over but there are many other avenues within aviation that are still unknown. With this celebration, our aim is to see girls from the state of Goa explore exciting careers available to them as engineers, air traffic controllers and dozens of other jobs within aviation.”
“We will continue our endeavour to introduce young girls to role models and educate them in a fun and supportive atmosphere. We are very fortunate to be able to partner with Lockheed Martin India and Airport Authority of India for this event. Their efforts in leading youth into STEM careers is truly commendable,” added Bhatia.

Since its inception in 2015, Women in Aviation International (India Chapter) has reached out to over 1,500 young girls to encourage them to undertake STEM subjects and explore career opportunities in aviation-related industries.
Turkish Airlines with GBTA Hosts Corporate Club Conference
Turkish Airlines, the airline flying to more countries than any other airline, hosted the Turkish Airlines Corporate Club Conference on September 17-18 in Istanbul, in partnership with the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA).
The conference is an annual international event where industry leaders come together and discuss the future of business travel. This year’s event saw 900 participants attend from 71 countries across the widest international flight network that Turkish Airlines operates. The programme featured leading names in the industry including Mike Walsh, CEO of Tomorrow, an innovation consultancy, as a keynote speaker. He is also the best-selling author of the book Futuretainment.
The theme of 2018’s conference was ‘Building for the Future’, featuring Chairman of the board and the executive committee, Turkish Airlines, M. İlker Aycı with the BBC’s Aaron Heslehurst moderating. This year’s theme resonated on three levels – for Turkey as a country, Turkish Airlines as a global flag carrier and for the travel industry. Turkey has undergone a huge transition over recent years in developing its economy and infrastructure. To set just one example in this regard, the Istanbul New Airport – a state-of-the-art facility, which will open on October 29, will be the largest airport in the world by 2023. The much-anticipated opening of the new airport will position Istanbul as the ‘Hub of the World’ and will see 200 million passengers per year on completion. Turkish Airlines’ expansion has increased demand for this world-class facility, which will help the national flag carrier’s goal of 120 million passengers and a fleet of 500 aircraft by 2023.

Aeroflot and UAC Sign Agreement for 100 Sukhoi Superjet 100
Aeroflot and the United Aircraft Corporation signed an agreement for the delivery of 100 of Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100). The document was signed by the General Director, Aeroflot, Vitaly Saveliev and President, United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Yury Slyusar. The ceremony took place at the Eastern Economic Forum.
The agreement assumes the delivery of 100 Russian aircraft SSJ100 during the period from 2019 to 2026. The planes are to be delivered in two-class layout – 12 seats in the business class and 75 in the economy class. The complete contractual documentation is to be signed upon finalising of all the essential terms of the contract and the appropriate corporate approval.
President, UAC, Yury Slyusar said, “The Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company and Aeroflot are bonded with a long-lasting experience of collaboration. As a launch customer and the owner of the biggest SSJ100 fleet, Aeroflot influenced the project and Russian aircraft industry in general greatly. Signing the long-term agreement is a new page in this collaboration, another joint input in the development of the aircraft production. We are content that the work with the leading Russian airline continues.
General Director, Aeroflot, Vitaly Saveliev commented, “We signed the largest agreement in the newest history of the airline, the company will receive another 100 modern Russian aircraft SSJ100. Taking into account the agreement for 50 MC-21 – and by 2026 our company will put on routes 200 Russian aircraft. Aeroflot has always performed the important role of the launch customer for Russian planes. Acting in the best interest of Russian aviation and the whole country is our absolute priority.
President, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), Alexander Rubtsov noted, “Cooperation between SCAC and the national airline and the largest air carrier of the Russian Federation has become an invaluable experience, which occurred especially significant at the stage of operation launch. Aeroflot had sufficient impact on SSJ100 project development and further collaboration. The increase of the fleet via adding more Russian aircraft is the highest appreciation of our work and the sign that we are on the right way.
Currently, the airline operates 49 SSJ100. The 50th aircraft of this type is to be delivered in the nearest future.
Russian Helicopters to Supply Medical Helicopters to National Air Ambulance Operator
During the Hydroaviasalon-2018 exhibition, subsidiaries of Rostec State Corporation Russian Helicopters, National Service of Medical Aviation and Avia Capital Services LLC signed a contract to supply 104 Ansat and 46 Mi-8AMT medically equipped helicopters. Agreements on after-sales service were also signed.
The agreements on helicopters delivery will be implemented as part of a large-scale project of Rostec State Corporation on creating a single operator of air ambulance services in the regions of the Russian Federation. In the presence of minister of industry and trade of the Russian Federation, Denis Manturov, the document was signed by Director General of Russian Helicopters Andrey Boginskiy, general director of National Service of Medical Aviation Ruslan Golik and general director of Avia Capital Services LLC Roman Pakhomov.
“Development of EMS aviation is one of the priorities of the ‘Health’ national project. Rostec implements a comprehensive project in this area on establishing a special air ambulance service, providing it with aircraft and building the necessary ground infrastructure. A hundred and fifty helicopters will be manufactured and delivered specifically for NSMA — this is a record number of helicopters made for EMS aviation. Investments in the project exceed 40 billion rubles. The complex of measures that we implement will allow the new service to effectively carry out life-saving missions”, stated CEO, Rostec State Corporation Sergey Chemezov at the signing of the contract.
Last year, Rostec State Corporation undertook the initiative on creating a united system of air ambulance in Russia, which was supported by the President of Russia. The purpose of the National Service of Medical Aviation is to perform operations providing medical care 24/7 in accordance with a common standard. The project is financed by Avia Capital Services LLC, which procures helicopters and provides them to the National Service of Medical Aviation for 15 years on financial lease terms.
The National Service of Medical Aviation is already transporting patients in need of emergency care in Saint Petersburg, the Moscow Region, the Leningrad Region, the Sverdlovsk Region, the Novgorod Region and Karelia.
Under the contract, at Hydroavaisalon, the first Mi-8AMT EMS helicopter was officially handed over to NSMA. The helicopter is fitted with the necessary medical equipment for resuscitation on board, including an artificial lung ventilation system and a Tele-ECG machine which reads an electrocardiogram in real time.
The Mi-8AMT and Ansat medical helicopters meet all international air ambulance standards and have the necessary equipment to provide medical care during patients’ transportation.
