L&T signs contract with South Korea’s Hanwha Techwin for making artillery guns

Larsen & Tourbo (L&T), one of India’s largest private defence companies, has inked a contract with South Korea’s Hanwha Techwin to manufacture 155mm/ 52 Cal Tracked Self Propelled (SP) Gun for the Indian Army. L&T was declared the sole qualified bidder, post User Evaluation Trials, based on the performance of the K9 VAJRA-T, a self-propelled howitzer. The first Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in 2007 but was retracted and after that two more RFPs were issued, with L&T emerging the winner in 2011.

Jayant Patil, head of defence and aerospace and member of Heavy Engineering Board at L&T, said, “The government had said that only the foreign bidder must bid. The Korean company stood up and said that it would not bid. This is a matter of belief system that an Indian programme could only be won with what our Deputy Chief of Army has being saying, ‘with Indian solutions’. So, it’s Indian solutions which will make a difference.”
