The J&K issue cannot be resolved through rhetoric and half-hearted measures

When the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power at the Centre with a massive majority in May 2014, it was hoped that a policy will be formed to resolve the perennial problem of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Two and a half years down the line, this hope has been belied. The biggest mistake the BJP has made is to form a coalition government with People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The ideologies of two parties are totally different. The BJP is a Right-wing party with its stated objective of removing Article 370 while PDP consists of closet separatists. The twain can never meet but the lure of power makes for strange bedfellows.

Where Does the Problem Lie?
One does not have to be a genius to figure out that the basic problem is in five Sunni dominated districts of Srinagar valley. The area comprising these districts is only 13 per cent of the total area of the Jammu and Kashmir state and the population is only five per cent of the state. Yet, they hold the entire country to ransom. Their slogan for azadi is only a façade. Their avowed aim is to make this area a part of Pakistan. This needs to be clearly understood.

Pakistan gets traction into Jammu and Kashmir problem only because we have miserably failed to manage our affairs. The policy of appeasement of Separatists and a complete lack of will to restore government authority and rule of law in these five districts has aggravated the situation. A stage has come when security forces are being prevented from doing their job by stone pelting mobs and no action is being taken against them. We must be the only country in the world where secessionists are being provided security and financial assistance by the government. Political leaders of all hues make a beeline to separatist leaders who slam the door in their faces. Yet, they refuse to learn and continue to humour the Separatists.
