What are your ongoing programmes at the shipyard and what all is in the pipeline?

Presently, there are three ongoing projects at the shipyard. The first is an anti-submarine warfare corvette project for the Indian Navy. Under this, we are building four ships. The first of the class is likely to be delivered to the Indian Navy by the end of this year. Thereafter, we shall be delivering one ship every year. We are hopeful that the project would be completed by 2015.

The second programme is for the Indian Coast Guard. We are building eight Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs), of which, two have already been delivered to the customer. The remaining six ships are likely to be delivered by next year.
The third and the most prestigious project currently on at GRSE is an export order. This is the first export order for us. We are building an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) for the government of Mauritius. The keel of the ship is likely to be laid next month and the delivery is planned for 2014.

As far as future projects are concerned, we have signed a contract to deliver eight Landing Craft Utility (LCU) class of ships to the Indian Navy. We have already begun the preparatory work for the project. In addition to these, we are also in discussions with the Indian Navy for the supply of four Fast Attack Craft class of ships. We are hopeful of signing this contract very soon.

What is the capacity of GRSE? How many ships can you build at a time and what is the maximum ship size that you can construct?

Our current capacity is to build four big ships and six small ships at the same time. While a big ship could be any vessel with the displacement of 3,000 to 5,000 ton, a small ship ranges from 300 to 1,000 ton. Once the modernisation process that is underway at the shipyard is completed in the next few months, we would have doubled our capacity. Then we will be able to undertake construction of eight big ships and 12 small ships at the same time.
