A Precious Diwali Gift
The Prime Minister has announced a special package of Rs 745 crore for rebuilding Kashmir after the devastating floods

By Fayaz Bukhari

Srinagar: It was an unusual Diwali gift for the people of Kashmir this year. The Prime Minister spent time with the flood affected people and announced a special package of Rs 745 crore to help rebuild the ravaged state. Out of this, Rs 175 crore is meant for renovation of six major hospitals while Rs 570 crore is for rebuilding homes damaged in the floods. The money, he said, would be directly credited to the bank accounts of the victims, thus removing any bureaucratic hurdle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began the day with soldiers at the world’s highest battlefield, the Siachen glacier. Dressed in battle fatigue woollen jackets, a red scarf and goggles Modi said, “I am fortunate that as a servant of the nation, I got to see in what circumstances the soldiers have to live here,” he said in his address to the troops.

The Prime Minister while praising the valour and courage of the soldiers said: “I come to celebrate my first Diwali as Prime Minister with you. Happy to be among my own. You make it possible for 125 crore Indians to celebrate Diwali happily. Your dreams and responsibilities are the responsibility of all of us. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with you.”

He went on to laud the soldiers for their dedication and patriotism, and appreciated the fact that they worked in one of the remotest places in the world. He praised them for the sterling service they provided during the recent floods in Kashmir.

Later, he said, “How many decades have passed without ‘one rank, one pension’. It was in my destiny that ‘one rank, one pension’ has been fulfilled, and preparations are being made for a National War Memorial that we could all be proud of.”
