Srinagar: Following the attack on pilgrims in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district which resulted in the death of seven and injuries to several others, people from different sections of Kashmir condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims.

In one such gesture, members of Kashmiri civil society, which included traders, travel agents, students, lawyers, social activists, academicians and journalists held a sit-in protest with placards, condemning and demanding the impartial investigation into the attack, at Pratap Park outside press colony in Srinagar.

The government both at the centre and in the state appreciated the widespread condemnation of the attack in the valley.

During a news conference at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, Union minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday praised the Kashmir civil society for condemning the attack on the pilgrims. “I hail and appreciate the widespread condemnation by the civil society members on the attack on Amarnath pilgrims,” minister of state for the development of north eastern region said.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti also appreciated the local population for rescuing and helping the injured pilgrims. She also stated that the response and reaction of the Kashmiri people post the attack shows that the spirit of Kashmiryat is alive.
