Vice Admiral Girish Luthra inaugurates HADR storehouse in Mumbai

Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral Girish Luthra inaugurated a dedicated humanitarian assistance & disaster relief (HADR) storehouse at Material Organisation, Ghatkopar (West), Mumbai on 29 March 2017.

The dedicated HADR storehouse will facilitate stocking of requisite inventory under a single roof for expeditious response and prompt delivery in case of an emergency. The storehouse is equipped with latest storage and racking systems in an area of 6,500 sqft.

The Indian Navy frequently renders aid to civil authorities during natural calamities and disasters both in India and the wider Indian Ocean Region. Indian naval ships are always deployed, carrying relief material, to provide succour when required. On September 16, INS Trikand was diverted from her operational deployment to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to the residents of Ambilobe, Madagascar.

HADR material is broken into denominations of Pallets (for 100 people) and Bricks (10 Pallets) consisting of relief items including clothing, tents, Gen-sets, torches/Petromax lamps, tarpaulin, raincoats, sleeping bags, blankets, dhurries, mosquito nets, portable water tanks etc. HADR Bricks are kept inside two ready to use containers, which can be delivered on-board Indian Navy’s Fleet Support Ships (tankers) at short notice.
