Air Works Completes 200th Heavy Check in Hosur

Air Works, India’s largest EASA certified independent MRO services provider, on June 8 announced an important milestone in its journey. When SpiceJet’s VT-SLB, a B737 aircraft, rolled out of Air Works’ Base Maintenance facility at Hosur on May 16, the company had successfully completed its 200th Base Maintenance check.

Air Works offers Base Maintenance services on B737, A320, ATR42/72 aircrafts at its facility in Hosur (near Bangalore), and Line Maintenance services on A320, A330, A340, B737, B777, B787, and ATR72 aircrafts across 18 international airports in India for domestic and international operators.

This important milestone comes at a time when Air Works MRO business has grown from Rs 24 crore in 2008 to Rs 600 crore in FY2017. The company currently operates in five countries across Europe and Asia and has an existing order backlog of Rs 1,800 crore.

Going forward, given the encouraging policy moves outlined in 2016’s National Civil Aviation Policy and the UDAN scheme launched by the government of India, we can only expect the aviation industry to grow further and expand to Tier–II cities in India,” said Anand Bhaskar, Executive Vice President, Air Works. Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet, congratulated Air Works in their achievement and expressed his satisfaction on the delivery. “Congratulations to the Air Works team on this achievement. We appreciate the quick turnaround times and their world-class MRO facility. I look forward to sustaining our engagement with them in the future.” The check was completed within six days as compared to the scheduled time of seven days, thus allowing the airline to earn an extra day’s worth of revenue from the aircraft.

P&W Purepower Geared Turbofan Engine Successfully Acquired Type Certification

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation and Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp., announced that Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower Geared Turbofan PW1200G engine has successfully acquired type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of United States. This comes on the heels of the fourth Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) Flight Test Aircraft arriving in the Moses Lake Flight Test Centre supporting a busy 2017 of testing and milestones, including completion of initial cold and hot soak and natural icing tests.

The MRJ-70 and MRJ-90 will each be powered by two PW1200G engines. The engine was optimised specifically for the MRJ programme, which in turn designed the wing and aerodynamics with the PW1200G in mind. The engines’ advanced technology will contribute to a 10-20 per cent reduction in operating costs compared to the current generation of regional aircraft and 50 per cent lower in regulated emissions, enabling the MRJ to offer best-in-class efficiency and environmental performance.

“The integration of the engine and aircraft design underscores just how critical collaboration is to the success of creating a next-generation regional aircraft and we are very proud to be the first company to have selected this game-changing engine for the MRJ. We congratulate the Pratt & Whitney team on this important milestone,” said Hisakazu Mizutani, president, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation. “This achievement is the latest in an ongoing series of developmental milestones and tests that the MRJ has conducted, and we are looking ahead to the next phase of testing on our aircraft.”

COMAC C919 Jetliner Makes Its Maiden Flight with Saft ULM Batteries On Board

On May 5, COMAC’s C919, the largest commercial jetliner designed and built in China, completed its maiden flight with Saft’s specialised aviation batteries on board. This follows the decision by AUAE (Xi’an AVIC Hamilton Sundstrand Aviation Electric Co., Ltd.) to place a multi-million dollar contract with Saft to supply ULM batteries for every C919 built over the next 20 years.

The C919, manufactured by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) is a strategically important project that further reinforces the country’s plans to develop its own aviation industry. The new aircraft has more than 150 seats and a range of 4,075 kilometres and is intended to compete with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 single-aisle jetliners. COMAC has reported 570 orders from 23 buyers, with sales expected to exceed 2,000 over the next 20 years.

“The C919 is taking China into a new era of commercial aviation. To ensure its success it is vital that COMAC has total confidence in the performance and reliability of every on-board system. We are pleased to be working with Saft in this endeavour,” said Steven Kotso, General Manager of AUAE.

Under the contract with AUAE, Saft will supply two 44 Ah batteries from its Ultra Low Maintenance range for each C919 aircraft. They will provide safe and reliable power to start the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) as well as emergency backup for critical systems.

“The choice of Saft batteries for the C919 is an important milestone that reinforces our strong working relationship with a major player in China’s fast growing passenger aircraft industry”, said Antoine Brenier, Saft Aviation International sales and marketing director.

Cessna Turbo Skyhawk JT-A Receives EASA and FAA Certification

Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. company, on June 6 announced, that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have certified the Cessna Turbo Skyhawk JT-A with next-generation Garmin G1000 NXi avionics, paving way for deliveries to customers in Europe and the U.S. The company also announced the aircraft, equipped with the proven Continental CD-155 engine, has exceeded initial performance targets including improved maximum range.

The Turbo Skyhawk JT-A is a factory option that includes an integrated power plant, propeller and cockpit upgrade package that boosts the standard Skyhawk’s performance.

“The Skyhawk platform represents the most successful single-engine aircraft of all time, and we’re excited to further enhance its capabilities with Jet-A power plant technology,” said Doug May, vice president, Piston Aircraft. “The Turbo Skyhawk JT-A allows operators to meet changing environmental regulations around the world, providing solutions to increase the global reach of this already proven platform.”

Further confirming the aircraft’s leadership, the Turbo Skyhawk JT-A has achieved an improved range of 963 nautical miles, an increase of 78 nautical miles over original estimates. The aircraft has also reached an improved take-off distance of 1,320 feet and a max climb rate of 767 feet per minute.

The Skyhawk platform is renowned for offering the best combination of modern features, including the leading Garmin G1000 NXi avionics system with wireless connectivity, a standard Angle-of-Attack display system, and proven dependability. The aircraft’s high-wing design enables superior flying characteristics ideally suited for pilot training. More Skyhawks have been delivered to customers around the world than any other type of aircraft, with more than 44,000 put into service.

Textron Aviation Inc., announced on June 8, it recently celebrated the delivery of the 2,000th aircraft from its industry-leading Cessna CJ light jet family. The milestone aircraft, a Cessna Citation CJ3+, was delivered to long-time customer Marc Dulude during a ceremony at Textron Aviation headquarters in Wichita.

“The CJ3+ provides the efficiency, reliability and overall exceptional performance that the CJ aircraft are known for, and is representative of our continued leadership in the light jet segment. No other product family in its class offers a wider range of capabilities, allowing customers like Marc to find the perfect fit for their mission needs,” said Rob Scholl, senior vice president, sales and marketing. “Marc has been an outstanding customer and advocate for the Cessna brand, and we’re thrilled to have him represent the 2,000th customer for our CJ family.”

The CJ family, including the current production Citation M2, Citation CJ3+ and Citation CJ4, has reached nearly five million flight hours.

Textron Aviation Inc., announced on June 13, it has rolled out the first production unit of the Cessna Citation Longitude, the company’s latest clean-sheet design, super-midsize business jet. State-of-the-art assembly and fabrication tools and techniques bring exceptional quality and superior fit and finish to this revolutionary aircraft.

“The Citation Longitude sets a new standard in the super-midsize segment, not only through the aircraft’s design and performance, but also in the way we are manufacturing it,” said Ron Draper, senior vice president, Integrated Supply Chain. “We’re incorporating a number of new and innovative fabrication and assembly techniques that will improve processes, reduce the number of parts and provide excellent quality and precision that will aid in the overall maintainability of the aircraft.”

“Careful attention to detail, combined with advanced manufacturing techniques results in a production process that greatly benefits our customers,” said Draper. “We are able to move more quickly from concept to delivery with a high-quality product that we know will exceed the expectations of our customers.”

This aircraft will join the company’s demonstration fleet this summer and will travel the world to showcase the Longitude’s amazing capabilities and class-leading interior to customers.

The first Longitude flew in October 2016 and to date, the flight test programme’s four aircraft have accumulated more than 550 hours. A fifth aircraft will join the flight test programme this summer, showcasing the company’s dedication and commitment to getting the aircraft in the hands of its customers. The Longitude is expected to enter the market by the end of the year.
