Advanced Airfields

The Indian Air Force (IAF) commissioned its first Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI) pilot project at Model Base; Air Force Station Bhisiana in March this year. The formal acceptance and commissioning of Air Force Station Bhisiana (Bhatinda) is a significant milestone for the massive programme to modernise airfields belonging to the IAF, Indian Navy and Coast Guard.

Air Marshal R.K. Sharma, Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) who formally commissioned the Pilot Project said, “MAFI project, by fulfilling the need to match ground infrastructure with capability of the modern aircraft, will enhance the overall capability of the India’s air power.” He added, “MAFI would substantially improve all – weather capability, aid the civil aircraft that operate from the joint – user aerodromes, enhance Aerospace safety and in the process aid growth of the aviation sector in the country.”

Air Force Station, Bhisiana was chosen as the pilot project for the MAFI project which required complex and extensive integration of various navigational aids and other equipment selected by the IAF. The airfield was inaugurated by switching on the runway lighting and the carrying out of a Doppler VOR/ Instrument Landing System (DVOR/ILS) approach by a Su-30 MKI. This followed by an HS-748 ‘Avro’ transport that was piloted by the VCAS himself who carried out an ILS approach and overshoot by night.
